Turkey's original inhabitants were one of the first farmers. The
Hittite, Phrygian and Lydian flourished in Turkey as did much of
Greek civilization. After the fall of Rome in the 5th century,
Constantinople was the capital of the Byzantine Empire for 1,000
years. It fell in 1453 to the Ottoman Turks who ruled a vast
empire for over 400 years. The Ottoman Empire controlled Syria,
Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and many
islands in the Aegean sea. Turkey joined Germany and Austria in
World War I, after which it lost much territory and the Islamic Khilafa
(leadership) fell together with the Ottoman sultanate.
On October 29, 1923 a secular republic was declared by Ataturk who worked
hard to cut Turkey's links to Islam. Turkey later became a member of the
NATO. Turkey invaded Cyprus on July 20, 1974 after Greek officials
seized the Cypriot government attempting to unify it with Greece.
Turkey sought a divided Cyprus. U.S. aid was suspended in 1975
and Turkey stopped the U.S. use of air and naval bases. Aid was
restored in 1978 and on September 12, 1980 a military coup
occurred. Martial law was imposed and lifted in 1984. The
military transferred power in 1983 to an elected parliament.
